Cloning a computer hard drive

First create a tempate hard drive that you want to ghost To test the tempate at where you want to use it Make sure all function work fine (eg internet, printing, etc)

To install the hard drive where you want to store the image file

  1. Open the case
  2. check the jumper for the hard drive. Can set the tempate HD have Master and the image HD set as slave.
  3. Plug in the IDE cable and power
  4. If the image HD is not partition or format, follow the step below to create a partition for the HD
  5. Repeat this procedure once more time if your Cloned HD is not partition or formatted.

To create a boot disc at window98

  1. Go to Start->Setting->Control Panel
  2. Double click on Add/Remove Program
  3. Click on “Startup disk”
  4. Follow the instruction to create boot disc

Using windows98 or Windows 98 boot disk

  1. Start window98 and run Command-Prompt (Or you can run DOS)
  2. Type “fdisk” to start
  3. Choose which hard drive you want to partition
  4. (IF this option show up) Choose FAT32 if the image is going to run 98, NTFS
  5. Follow the instruction to complete partition
  6. After partition, format the partition drive by using command “format (drive):”

If using Windows 2000 or XP, follow the step below to partition the drive

  1. Go to Start->Setting->Control Panel
  2. Double click on Administrative Tools
  3. Double click Computer MAnagement
  4. Select Disk Management
  5. Then select the hard drive to be partition.

Before createt the image of the tempate, need to install the HD first

  1. Set image HD’s jumper as slave and tempate HD’s jumper as Master Jumper setting instruction is on top of the HD.
  2. Plug in the IDE ribbon Cable and power supply for both hard drive. Make sure the IDE ribbon cable is plug in the correct direction

Create a image by using Knoppix – partition image command

  1. Press <Del> to enter BIOS setup
  2. Go to advance setting
  3. Set CD-ROM boot before Hard disk (eg have 2nd Boot Device as CD-ROM, 3rd Boot Device as IDE-0)
  4. use Knoppix CD (Live Linux CD 2003) to boot up the computer
  5. Press F3 to have user setting
  6. Type in command “Knoppix screen=800×600” (The default is better resolution, but computer may not support, so need to choose lower resolution)
  7. Wait for system to finish boot up
  8. At start application choose “KNOPPIX”, then choose “Root Shell”
  9. At root shell, type in command “mount /mnt/hdb1/” to mount the image drive
  10. At root shell, type in command “partimage” to start partition image
  11. First choose which drive you want to make image of (eg hda1, Master of IDE0)
  12. Then put where you want to save the image (eg save the image at other hard drive /dev/hdb1/imagename)
  13. Choose “Save partition into a new image file” (First option)
  14. Press F5 to go to next screen
  15. Choose no compression for the image (which make the process faster for both create image and restore image)
  16. Press F5 to continous
  17. Enter a description for the image and press enter
  18. Computer start create image

If the Cloned hard drive is not partition or format, you need to do it first

Before restore the image to the Cloned HD, need to install both HD first

  1. Set image HD’s jumper as slave and Cloned HD’s jumper as Master Jumper setting instruction is on top of the HD.
  2. Plug in the IDE ribbon Cable and power supply for both hard drive. Make sure the IDE ribbon cable is plug in the correct direction

Restore (Cloning) from image file by Digital Dolly Assume the Clone Disk is hda (Master) and Image Disk is hdb (Slave)

  1. Set CD-ROM as the boot drive
  2. Disable the Hard drive to boot up
  3. Insert “Digital Dolly” CD into CD-ROM
  4. When it booted up, it will ask if you want to update the hardware config, choose “Do Nothing”
  5. Wait until “Digitl Dolly” finishing bootup
  6. Choose “3. Partition Management” -> “View create / delete partition”
  7. Choose the target drive as hda
  8. Delete all old partition
  9. Choose “New” then “Primary” to create partition
  10. Choose “Type” then choose “0C” (Win95 FAT32 (LBA))
  11. Make sure the drive is bootable, and then choose “Write” to write on disk
  12. Choose “Mount / unmount drive” from the main menu
  13. Choose “Mount local Drive” and mount the drive with image (eg. hdb), press <enter> to continous
  14. After mount the image drive, choose “Partition Cloning” from main menu to start cloning
  15. Then choose “Restore Partition”
  16. Type the path and name of the image file (eg. /mnt/win98-lab.000)
  17. Choose the target drive as hda
  18. Wait for the process to complete and choose “Ignore” after the restore finish
  19. The clone disk is now ready to use, choose “Shutdown” from main menu to exit
  20. After computer stop working, take the digital dolly CD out
  21. Turn off the power, take the image drive out and reset the boot sequence
  22. Reboot the computer to check for any problem
