New Volunteers

Welcome to VCN!
Congratulations!  You have finished shadowing and the training session and have officially started your first shift. This is to get you started for your shift. The Volunteer Manual will have much more information.

Volunteers can commit to volunteer hours between 10:00AM and 4:00PM. All volunteers must leave the building by 4:20PM as the building is locked.

1. Introduce yourself to the other helpdesk volunteers on shift and tell them you are starting your first shift.

2. Signup for your weekly shift (or more, if you can) on the Volunteer Calendar, for a month in advance, if possible. Otherwise signup as much in advance before your next shift. You can come in as often as you want, but you should do the minimum one shift a week.

3. Get your RT account from the on-duty system administrator.  Send an email to one of the system admins to test your new account.

4. When things are not busy, start working on the Helpdesk Level 1 Checklist. If you need clarification on one of the listed tasks, ask another volunteer for help—when they have time.

5. Now, jump in and get started!. All the basic tasks are are explained in the VCN Website help section and the Volunteer Manual. If you don’t know what to do, follow the instructions there. The quickest way to learn and finish the checklist is start registering people, answering phone calls, solving RT requests, etc., using the volunteer manual as your guide.
